Clematis 'Maria Louise' – internationally also known as 'Maria Louise Jensen' – was bred in 1986 by the German breeder Friedrich Manfred Westphal and introduced in 1987. Its 10–12 cm flowers glow in intense dark violet-blue, with a paler, slightly reddish-tinged central bar on the gently waved sepals and striking purple-red stamens. Particularly appealing: in the first flush 'Maria Louise' appears double to semi-double, while the later flush produces single flowers.
'Maria Louise' flowers first in June and puts on a second flush from July to August. Reaching around 200 cm, this rewarding, free-flowering variety is well suited to trellises, obelisks or trellis panels, as well as container growing on a patio or balcony. Choose a sunny to partly shaded spot with well-drained, evenly moist soil.
'Maria Louise' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to around -23 °C). Cut the shoots back to about 75 cm in June to keep the plant compact and encourage a reliable second flush.
