Clematis 'Madame Baron Veillard' was introduced in 1885 by the French breeder Baron Veillard at his nursery near Orléans. Its 7–9 cm flowers open as flat saucers in rich pink, with a fine satin sheen and slightly ribbed sepals; pale, greenish-white stamens provide an attractive contrast.
Flowering from July to September, 'Madame Baron Veillard' is one of the later-blooming varieties, bringing colour to the garden well into late summer. At around 350 cm in height it suits trellises, obelisks and other climbing supports, and can also be trained through shrubs. Since the flowers form on the current year's growth, it thrives best in a full-sun position, while the root area should stay cool and shaded.
'Madame Baron Veillard' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). Since it flowers only on new wood, cut it back hard to about 50 cm in March – this encourages dense, floriferous new growth. As with many clematis, the sap can irritate the skin, so gloves are recommended when pruning.
