Clematis 'Masquerade' was introduced around 1994 by British breeder Raymond Evison. It was originally sold under an incorrect label and later reintroduced under its current name – not to be confused with the viticella cultivar 'Maskarad', which is sometimes also sold as 'Masquerade'. Its 12–15 cm flowers appear in rich violet with purple bars on each sepal and belong to the early large-flowered hybrids.
'Masquerade' flowers twice a year: in June and again from July to August. At around 200 cm, this free-flowering, compact variety suits trellises, obelisks and other supports well, and also thrives in containers on a balcony or terrace. You have flexibility with the site – 'Masquerade' tolerates almost any aspect.
'Masquerade' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). For vigorous growth and abundant flowering, cut the shoots back to about 75 cm in March.
