Clematis 'Black Tea' was raised around 1995 by Japanese breeder Hiroshi Hayakawa as an open-pollinated seedling of 'Mrs N Thompson'. Its flowers, about 12 cm across, glow in dark purple, with a dark red bar down the middle of each of the six broad, pointed sepals, which have gently wavy edges. The anthers shimmer reddish-purple to brown on pale filaments.
At around 200 cm, 'Black Tea' climbs trellises, obelisks and other supports, and can also be grown in a large container. It flowers from May to June. Choose a spot in sun to partial shade with moist, well-drained soil.
'Black Tea' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). Since the early flowers form on the previous year's wood, do not prune hard in spring. Instead, for vigorous growth and a rich display, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June.
