Clematis 'Snow Queen' is a chance seedling from New Zealand, selected in the 1950s and introduced to the UK in 1983. Its 12–15 cm flowers are white with a delicate mauve tinge at first and then turn pure white; the wide, overlapping sepals have a charmingly wavy edge.
The main flowering comes in May and June, followed by a second flush in August whose sepals often carry a pale pink stripe. At about 200 cm, 'Snow Queen' branches very well and grows vigorously – so give it plenty of room on a trellis, an obelisk or in a large container. It likes full sun to partial shade, with cool, moisture-retentive, well-drained soil and shaded roots.
'Snow Queen' is hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). Cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June. Plant it so that the crown sits 5–8 cm below the soil surface – this encourages new shoots from below ground.

Snow Queen grows with me into an approximately 2 metre tall red-leaved Japanese maple (see photo). Every year it grows so fast that it reaches the top of it. The stems and the foliage are strong. The plant branches out very well. The flowers are not only nicely large, but open very regularly and have a strong structure. The edges are slightly wavy. The stamens have the same colour as the maple leaves. I have planted the oriental poppy "Patty's Plum" next to it, whose flowers also have the same colour. In the bed around it a lot of green, white and dark red-purple. It looks absolutely great. Snow Queen is totally healthy with me and has never had clematis wilt. Highly recommended. But it needs space and must not grow into a shrub that is too small, because it would take a lot of light from it, as the foliage is very lush.Automatically translated · Show original
