Clematis 'Apollonia' comes from German breeder Willem Straver, who raised it in 2004; it was named and introduced in 2011. Its 6–8 cm flowers are pure white, single and made up of six to eight overlapping tepals. White filaments and cream anthers add subtle accents, and the flowers face upward, borne singly or in small groups.
The main flowering of 'Apollonia' falls in May and June. At around 400 cm tall, it takes over trellises, fences, pergolas and other supports and brings plenty of white to the spring garden. In summer, from July to September, the variety may set flowers again on new growth.
'Apollonia' is winter-hardy (zone 7, about -17.7 to -12.3 °C). Cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June after the first flowering to keep it vigorous and nicely branched.
