The Clematis 'Satsukibare' was raised by Japanese breeder Sakuji Uchida and was already in cultivation before 1983. Its name roughly means 'Blue Sky in May', referring to its characteristic flowering time. The 12–15 cm, saucer-shaped flowers appear in a rich violet-blue; six slightly wavy-edged tepals surround dark purple-red stamens on pale filaments.
Reaching around 200 cm in height, 'Satsukibare' suits trellises, obelisks and larger containers well. The first flush appears in June, followed by a repeat bloom from July to September. As an early-flowering, large-flowered hybrid, the variety thrives in both sunny and partially shaded positions.
'Satsukibare' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). For vigorous growth and abundant flowering, cut the shoots back to around 100 cm in June – the classic care for pruning group 2.
