Clematis 'Sealand Gem' was raised in 1957 by the British nursery Bees of Chester and is considered a sister seedling to 'Bees Jubilee' from the same batch. It delights with 10-15 cm flowers in violet with purple stripes; the overlapping, slightly wavy and twisted petals give the blooms their characteristic star shape.
Growing to around 300 cm, 'Sealand Gem' is ideally suited to trellises, pergolas and climbing frames on house walls, as well as for scrambling through larger shrubs and trees. It flowers from July to September, bringing colour to the garden all summer long. A sunny to partially shaded spot with a cool, shaded root run suits it best.
'Sealand Gem' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to around -23 °C) and copes well with Central European winters. Cut the shoots back to about 50 cm in March to encourage vigorous new growth and abundant flowering. Like most early large-flowered varieties, it needs a little time to establish after planting before showing its full flowering power.
