Clematis 'Richard Pennell' was raised in 1962 at the English Pennell nursery from a cross of 'Vyvyan Pennell' and 'Daniel Deronda', and was named in 1974 by Walter Pennell after his son. Its large flowers, around 15 cm across, show eight broad, slightly wavy sepals in rich purple with a darker central bar, set off by cream to golden stamens.
'Richard Pennell' flowers in two flushes: first in early summer from May to June, then again in August. At around three metres in height, it is well suited to trellises, trellis panels and obelisks, and can be planted against walls, fences or pergolas in any aspect.
The variety is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and has been given the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit for its dependable garden performance. Cut it back to about 100 cm in June after the first flowering so it regrows vigorously and flowers abundantly again in late summer.
