Clematis 'Rooran' was raised in Japan in 1995 by Masako Takeuchi – its name means “city on the Silk Road” in Japanese. Its flowers are 8–10 cm across and bright pink; the six to eight elliptic, long-tipped sepals are slightly waved, a little paler towards the base and marked with dark pink veins. Brown anthers on creamy filaments add a calm contrast at the centre.
At around 200 cm, 'Rooran' climbs by its leaf petioles up fences, arbours, trellises and obelisks, and can equally be grown in a container. The first flush appears in May and June; after pruning, a second flowering follows from July to August. The cultivar is undemanding when it comes to position and thrives in any aspect.
'Rooran' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). As it belongs to pruning group 2 and carries its first flowers on the previous year's wood, prune only lightly in spring. For the second flush, cut the plant back to about 75 cm in June, after the first flowering.
