Clematis 'Silver Moon' was selected by English breeder Percy Picton and introduced in 1971 by the Jim Fisk nursery. Its large flowers appear in pale violet with a lighter central bar on six to eight lightly waved, overlapping sepals; creamy filaments carry cream to yellowish anthers, giving the blooms a silky sheen.
'Silver Moon' flowers first in June and follows with a second flush from July to September. At around 200 cm tall, it suits trellises, lattices and obelisks well, and also thrives in containers on a patio or balcony. As a Patens Group hybrid, it is undemanding about aspect and does well in any exposure.
At zone 6 (-23.3 to -17.8 °C), 'Silver Moon' is reliably hardy. After the first flowering, cut the shoots back to about 100 cm in June to encourage the second flush of blooms in late summer. In recognition of its garden merit, the cultivar received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in 1993.
