Clematis 'The Vagabond' was raised in 1984 by English breeder Ken Pyne and descends from 'Rouge Cardinal'. Its 10–12 cm flowers are velvety violet, with a reddish-maroon central bar on each of the six to eight elliptic, overlapping sepals. Cream-yellow anthers on green-white filaments add a light accent at the centre.

At around 150 cm, 'The Vagabond' stays manageable and suits trellises, obelisks and other supports, thrives in containers and happily climbs through shrubs that do not need hard pruning. The first flush appears in May and June, the second follows from July to August. Choose a spot in full sun to partial shade with cool, moist but well-drained soil, and keep the roots shaded.

'The Vagabond' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). As the flowers appear on the previous year's growth, do not cut back hard in spring. For vigorous growth and a rich second flush, cut the plant back to about 75 cm in June. Plant it with the crown 5–8 cm below the soil surface so that new shoots also grow from below ground.
