The Clematis 'Shin-shigyoku' was introduced by Japanese breeder H. Hayakawa before 1999. Its 10-12 cm flowers open fully double in deep purple: numerous irregularly elliptical, slightly curved tepals with a silvery sheen on the reverse surround violet anthers on whitish filaments.
'Shin-shigyoku' flowers from June to July. Once spent blooms are removed, a second, usually single flush often follows in late summer. Reaching around 200 cm, the variety suits trellises, obelisks, posts and containers, and also likes to scramble into shrubs. It thrives in south-, east- and west-facing positions and looks especially striking against a light background.
'Shin-shigyoku' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to around -23 °C). After the first flowering, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June; in early spring it is enough to remove dead and weak shoots. The variety belongs to pruning group 2 and is also well suited to container growing.
