Clematis 'Blue Ravine' was raised around 1978 by Canadian breeder Conrad Erickson. It is regarded as an open-pollinated seedling, believed to come from a cross of 'Nelly Moser' and 'Ramona'. It belongs to the patens hybrids and bears large blue flowers 10 to 15 cm across. The single flowers have seven to eight wavy-edged tepals, a darker central bar with radiating veins, dark purple-red stamens and white styles.
'Blue Ravine' flowers from June and July to August and reaches a height of about 300 cm. This makes it well suited to a trellis, obelisk or climbing frame. It does best in a sheltered spot in sun to partial shade; in strong direct sun the flowers may bleach. A cool, shaded root run, for example from underplanting or a layer of pebbles, suits it well.
'Blue Ravine' is hardy (zone 6, about -23.3 to -17.8 °C). Cut it back to about 100 cm in June. Plant it in well-drained yet moisture-retentive soil and set the root ball a little deeper, which encourages new shoots to form from below ground.
