Clematis 'Blue Ice Cream' is a new introduction from Polish breeder Szczepan Marczyński's nursery Źródło Dobrych Pnączy, presented in 2026 as a plant-breeder's-rights (PBR) protected cultivar. Its large, 15 to 17 cm wide blooms appear in a delicate pale blue and — unusually for a Patens hybrid — open partly double, partly semi-double.
The main flush appears from May to June, with a lighter second flowering in October. Growing 150 to 200 cm tall, 'Blue Ice Cream' suits trellises, obelisks and trellised supports in small to medium gardens, and also does well in containers on a balcony or patio.
'Blue Ice Cream' is very hardy (zone 4, -34.4 to -28.9 °C) and copes easily with harsh, cold locations. Cut it back to about 100 cm in June after the first flush to encourage vigorous growth and a good autumn rebloom.
