Clematis 'Hagelby White' was found in Sweden in the Hågelby Byparken park near Stockholm by Werner Stastny and Ulf Svensson and introduced in 1998 by F. M. Westphal to mark the tenth anniversary of the Swedish Clematis Society. How the plant came to be there remains a mystery. Its 5 cm nodding flowers have the typical viticella bell shape: they open creamy white, quickly fade to pure white, and show a finely textured surface on petals that spread towards the tips. Unlike 'Alba Luxurians', it never produces green deformed tepals.
From July to August 'Hagelby White' carries its flowers in great numbers. At around 300 cm with small leaves, it grows light and airy and suits trellises, obelisks and fences. Because it weighs very little, you can also let it climb through stronger shrubs. It does best in a sunny to partly shaded spot with moist but well-drained soil.
'Hagelby White' is very hardy (zone 5, down to about -23 to -29 °C). Pruning is simple: cut the plant back to about 25 cm in March, and it will shoot away strongly and flower generously.
