Clematis viticella 'Little Butterfly' traces back to a cross by Dutch breeders W. Snoeijer and J. Fopma, derived from the cultivar 'Abundance': bred in 1996, named in 1998 and introduced in 2001. Its 5–7 cm, semi-nodding flowers appear in a rich violet, with four lightly wavy-edged sepals and pale yellow anthers set on yellowish-green filaments. The foliage is eye-catching too, carrying a striking purple colouring.
From July to September, 'Little Butterfly' flowers reliably on the current season's growth. At around 300 cm, it is ideally suited to trellises, lattices and obelisks, and combines just as well with roses or other shrubs.
Its winter hardiness is very good at zone 5 (-28.8 to -23.4 °C). Cut the plant back hard to about 25 cm in March (pruning group 3): like most Viticella cultivars, 'Little Butterfly' reliably resprouts and rewards you with an even richer bloom.
