Clematis 'Henryi' was raised around 1870 by the Scottish breeder Isaac Anderson-Henry from Clematis lanuginosa and 'Fortunei' and has been one of the classic white large-flowered clematis ever since. Its 10–15 cm flowers are pure white, with six to eight elliptic, pointed sepals. At the centre sits a large crown of white filaments with dark brown to purple anthers, which creates the strong contrast.
At around 350 cm tall, 'Henryi' climbs vigorously up trellises, fences, obelisks and other supports, and can also be trained through trees. It flowers in June and July. The cultivar is undemanding as to aspect; it is happiest in sun to partial shade, in a sheltered spot and in moist, well-drained soil.
'Henryi' is fully hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). After the first flowering, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June; in early spring it is enough to remove dead and weak shoots.
