The clematis 'GLORIOUS® Red' (breeding code 'Zo23015') was bred in 2017 by Dutch breeder Jos van Zoest (J van Zoest Beheer BV, Boskoop) from one of his own seedling lines and the variety 'Niobe', then selected as a single plant in August 2019. Its flowers open deep red, single, with usually six narrow, pointed tepals that curve slightly downward, while the yellow-green stamens provide a striking contrast. At around 8 to 10 centimetres across, the flowers are on the larger side for the group and stand out clearly against the smaller, lighter purple-red blooms of the seed parent.
'GLORIOUS® Red' flowers from June to September and reaches a height of around 250 centimetres. Belonging to the Viticella Group, known for its resistance to clematis wilt, it is well suited to trellises, obelisks, pergolas or scrambling through sturdy shrubs. The roots should stand in shade while the shoots themselves enjoy a sunny to semi-shaded spot.
The variety is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to around -23.3°C) and is cut back to about 25 centimetres in March to encourage vigorous new growth and abundant flowering. As a Viticella variety, it tolerates hard pruning well and builds a bushy, free-flowering habit from its very first season.
