Clematis 'Esperanto' was raised in 1982 by the Estonian breeder Uno Kivistik from a cross of 'Serebriannyj Ruczejok' and 'Ernest Markham'. It is named in honour of the Estonian Esperanto Association. Its single flowers, 10–15 cm across, appear in a bold red with four to six petals and light brown stamens.
'Esperanto' flowers from July to September, bringing colour to late summer when many other climbers have finished. At around 200 cm tall, it suits trellises, obelisks, fences and other supports. It is not fussy about aspect and can be grown against any wall or support.
'Esperanto' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). Because it flowers on the current year's growth, it tolerates hard pruning: cut 'Esperanto' back to about 25 cm in March, and it will shoot vigorously and set plenty of flowers.
