Clematis 'Ekstra' was introduced in 1982 by Estonian breeder Uno Kivistik at Roogoja Farm, raised as a seedling of 'Serebryanyi Ruchejok' — its name is Estonian for 'extra' or 'special'. The flowers are blue, with a paler central bar on each of the usually six, pointed tepals, plus white filaments and anthers set against dark purple connectives; the slightly wavy tepal margin gives the 10–12 cm flowers a particularly lively texture.
'Ekstra' flowers from June to August on the current year's growth and reaches a height of around 200 cm — ideal for trellises, obelisks and other supports, but equally happy in a container on patio or balcony. A sunny to partly shaded spot suits it best; in hot, full-sun positions the flower colour can fade somewhat, so semi-shade brings out the strongest colour.
The variety is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C) and copes well with harsh winters. Cut 'Ekstra' back hard to about 25 cm in March so it flowers freshly and abundantly again the same year — note that the sap can irritate sensitive skin, so garden gloves are advisable.
