Clematis 'W.S. Callick' arose as a chance seedling bred by New Zealand hybridiser Alister Keay and was introduced in Britain by Fisk's Clematis Nursery in 1983; it is named after a friend of the breeder. Its large, vivid red flowers with red-brown to purple-brown stamens carry 6 to 8 slightly wavy, ribbed and overlapping petals with a curved edge.
With a hard prune, it flowers reliably from July to September. Reaching around 300 cm in height, 'W.S. Callick' suits trellises, obelisks and pergolas in medium-sized gardens and also thrives in a large container; it grows well in sun to semi-shade.
This variety is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to about -23.3 to -17.8 °C). For vigorous growth and abundant flowering, cut it back to around 50 cm in March; this hard pruning also ensures that 'W.S. Callick' flowers in summer rather than in early summer.
