Clematis 'Capitaine Thuilleaux' was raised in 1918 by the French breeder J. Thuilleaux of Saint-Cloud and named after his son, who was killed in the First World War — its full cultivar name is 'Souvenir du Capitaine Thuilleaux'. Its 10–20 cm flowers are pale pink with darker stripes on each petal and dark red stamens; over time the base colour fades to a silvery pink while the stripe stays vivid.
At around 300 cm, 'Capitaine Thuilleaux' climbs vigorously up trellises, pergolas and other supports, and works well in naturalistic plantings too. It flowers twice: from May to June and again from July to August. It is happiest in partial shade with a cool, shaded root run — plant it with the crown a few centimetres deep so new shoots can also grow from below ground.
'Capitaine Thuilleaux' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). Cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June after the first flowering to encourage vigorous growth and a rich second flush. As a heritage variety cultivated for more than a century, it has also proven a valuable parent, standing behind several newer hybrids.
