Clematis 'Vino' was raised in 1970 by the Danish breeder D. T. Poulsen and descends from a cross of 'Lasurstern' and 'Daniel Deronda'. Its 15–18 cm flowers are violet, with a darker bar running along each of the six to eight pointed, overlapping tepals. Pale yellow anthers on white to cream filaments set off the centre.
The main flowering comes in May and June, followed in September by a second flush of somewhat smaller flowers. At around 300 cm, 'Vino' suits trellises, obelisks and other supports that give its vigorous growth something to hold on to. The variety copes with any aspect.
'Vino' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 5, down to about -29 °C). For a rich second flush, cut the plant back to about 100 cm after the first flowering in June.
