Clematis montana 'Vera' is thought to be a variety from Cornwall, England, likely dating from the mid-20th century, and is botanically listed as a synonym of Clematis montana var. rubens 'Vera'. Its 6–8 cm deep pink flowers, each with four petals and bright yellow stamens, give off a pleasant vanilla scent, set against large, coarse, dark green foliage that is bronze-tinted when young.
At around 500 cm, 'Vera' is a vigorous climber that flowers abundantly from May to June. It is ideal for fences, pergolas, walls and even for scrambling into small trees – it thrives best in a sunny to semi-shaded, ideally sheltered spot, with the root area kept cool and shaded.
'Vera' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 7, down to about -17.7 °C) and belongs to pruning group 1: pruning is not strictly necessary, but for vigorous growth and a neater shape, cut the plant back to about 100 cm after flowering in June.
