Clematis montana 'Broughton Star' was introduced in England in 1988 by Vince and Sylvia Denny and is named after the parish of Broughton near Preston, Lancashire, where the breeders live. Its parents are given as 'Marjorie' and 'Picton's Variety'. The 4–6 cm flowers are violet-pink and semi-double to double: instead of stamens, a ring of inner tepals sits between the larger outer sepals. The new growth is bronzy and darkens to green as the year goes on.
It flowers in May and June. Growing up to 500 cm, 'Broughton Star' is not quite as vigorous as other montanas and therefore also finds a place in smaller gardens — provided a medium-sized tree, a larger shrub or another sufficiently large support is available. It prefers sunny, not wet positions.
Like many montanas, 'Broughton Star' is not fully hardy (zone 7, down to about -17 °C). Cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June, otherwise prune only when necessary. The variety was honoured by the British Clematis Society in 1998 and also holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
