Clematis 'Primrose Star PBR' was bred by New Zealand breeder Robin Mitchell in 1991 and introduced in 1996. Its semi-double, pleasantly fragrant flowers appear in a delicate cream-pink, reach 4 to 6 cm across and carry pale stamens at their centre.
From May to June, 'Primrose Star PBR' turns into a lavishly flowering wall feature and grows vigorously to as much as 500 cm. This makes it ideal for trellises, pergolas and larger climbing frames, up which it climbs briskly. A sunny to partly shaded, sheltered spot with a cool root run – kept shaded by low planting or a layer of mulch – suits it particularly well.
'Primrose Star PBR' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 7, down to about -17.7 °C). As it flowers on the previous year's wood, it is best to prune the shoots back to around 200 cm right after flowering in June – this keeps the plant compact and rewards you the following year with dense new growth and abundant flowers.
