Clematis 'Kalina' was bred by the Polish monk and renowned breeder Stefan Franczak – the plant first flowered in 1981 and was introduced in 1987. Its 12–15 cm flowers appear in a rich violet, with pale filaments and reddish-brown anthers at the centre; the six to eight overlapping sepals have a wavy edge and a pointed tip.
'Kalina' begins flowering in June and produces a generous second flush from July to September. Reaching around 250 cm in height, it climbs vigorously up trellises, obelisks and other supports.
'Kalina' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). For strong growth and abundant flowering, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June.
