Clematis viticella 'Hanna' was raised in 1994 by the Swedish breeder S. Widberg from a cross of Clematis campaniflora and Clematis viticella and introduced in 1999. It is named after the breeder's daughter, Hanna-Louise. Its violet flowers, 5–6 cm across, hang as nodding, open little bells; each consists of four pointed, rhombic sepals with a slightly darker central bar and yellow anthers.
From July to September 'Hanna' flowers on the new growth. At around 250 cm tall, it climbs trellises, obelisks and climbing frames. It thrives in sun to part shade in any aspect; choose a well-drained soil that holds moisture well.
'Hanna' is very hardy (zone 5, down to approx. -28 °C). Because it flowers on the new growth, cut the plant back hard to about 25 cm in March – this encourages vigorous growth and abundant flowering.
