Clematis 'Pagoda' was raised in 1980 by English breeder John Treasure (Treasures of Tenbury) from a cross of Clematis viticella with 'Etoile Rose' and introduced in 1983. Its nodding bell-shaped flowers, 5–7 cm across, are pink, with the margins and veins marked in a deeper mauve-pink. The four narrow sepals curve strongly upwards at the tips, and yellow stamens sit at the centre.
'Pagoda' flowers in high summer from July to August. At around 200 cm it suits trellises, obelisks and other supports and also thrives in containers. It likes sun or partial shade; the soil should be well-drained and evenly moist.
'Pagoda' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 5, down to about -23 °C). As a pruning group 3 Clematis viticella, it is cut back hard to about 25 cm in March, ideally to just above the lowest healthy buds. The spring pruning encourages vigorous new growth and a rich summer flowering.
