Clematis 'Hagelby Pink' is one of six colour forms found in the park Hågelby Byparken near Stockholm – alongside white, cream, light blue and two striped variants. How the original plant came to be there remains a mystery. Its 5 cm nodding flowers show the typical viticella bell shape with four broad, pale violet-pink sepals. Small leaves and a light habit give the plant an airy look; the Royal Horticultural Society has awarded it the Award of Garden Merit.
From July to August 'Hagelby Pink' carries its flowers in great numbers. At around 300 cm it suits trellises, obelisks and fences. Because it grows lightly, you can also let it climb through stronger shrubs or roses. It does best in a sunny to partly shaded, sheltered spot with moist but well-drained soil.
'Hagelby Pink' is hardy (zone 5, down to about -23 to -29 °C). Pruning is simple: cut the plant back to about 25 cm in March, and it will shoot away strongly and flower generously.
