Clematis 'Last Dance' comes from the Netherlands; R. Zwijnenburg is recorded as its breeder, and it has been grown there since about 1960, long listed as 'Orange Peel'. Its present name apparently refers to its late bloom. The 4–5 cm flowers are intensely yellow with exceptionally thick sepals that turn orange-yellow after the first autumn chills. Reddish stems and small green-blue leaves complete the picture.
The flowers appear from August to October, so 'Last Dance' only blooms as summer draws to a close. At around 400 cm it suits pergolas, fences and larger supports. It grows less exuberantly than its relative 'Bill MacKenzie', but it sets golden-yellow accents in late summer and autumn.
'Last Dance' is very hardy (zone 5, -28.8 to -23.4 °C). Cut the plant back to about 25 cm in March; this encourages vigorous growth and abundant flowering.
