Clematis 'Red Ballon' was introduced by the German breeder F. M. Westphal as a selection from Clematis orientalis and was already known before 1996. Its nodding flowers, 3 to 5 cm across, open yellow and turn bell-shaped and purple-toned as they mature, carried on four long-pointed sepals.
'Red Ballon' flowers from July to September and reaches a height of around 300 cm, making it well suited to fences, trellises and loose supports in a sunny spot. The plant copes well with dry, poor soils but dislikes heavy waterlogging, especially during its first autumn and winter after planting.
'Red Ballon' is hardy to zone 5 (about -28.8 to -23.4 °C). Cut it back hard to about 25 cm in March so it grows vigorously and flowers well (pruning group 3).
