Clematis rehderiana comes from the mountain forests of west China and is named after the German-American dendrologist Alfred Rehder, who described the species together with Ernest Henry Wilson. The small, velvety, bell-shaped flowers are yellow, with reflexed tips and greenish-brown stamens, borne in panicles up to 9 cm long. Their fragrance is reminiscent of cowslips.
Clematis rehderiana flowers from August to November and needs firm support to climb up to 400 cm. It thrives in sunny to semi-shaded spots in any aspect, exposed or sheltered, in evenly moist, well-drained soil; it is not intended for container growing. It establishes rather slowly at first — allow two to five years for it to settle in fully.
Clematis rehderiana is winter-hardy (zone 7, down to about -17.7 °C). Cut it back to about 25 cm in March so it breaks strongly and flowers reliably. It holds the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit and is considered bee-friendly.
