Clematis 'Luminous Snow' was introduced in 2023 by Polish breeder Szczepan Marczyński and belongs to the new LUMINOUS series within the Atragene Group, which also includes the darker-flowered 'Luminous Dusk'. With this series, Marczyński aimed to breed especially frost-hardy, undemanding and early-flowering alpine clematis with attractive, double blooms. 'Luminous Snow' produces 6 cm wide, white, bell-shaped, nodding flowers with a pleasant grapefruit-like fragrance; the foliage is notable for its yellowish colouring.
Growing 200 to 250 cm tall, 'Luminous Snow' is well suited to trellises, obelisks and other supports in medium-sized gardens as well as container growing on balconies and terraces. The main flowering period runs from May to June on old wood, typically followed by a smaller repeat bloom in summer. A sunny to partly shaded position with cool, shaded roots benefits growth, as is typical for alpine clematis.
'Luminous Snow' is very frost-hardy (zone 3, down to around -34.5 to -39.9 °C) and is a robust, undemanding variety. Pruning is carried out in June, cutting back to about 100 cm to encourage compact growth and abundant flowering. As alpine clematis flower on old wood, pruning should only take place after flowering; in the first years after planting, the plant gradually develops its full flowering potential.
