The Clematis 'King Edward VII' was raised around 1902 by the English nursery G. Jackman & Son from 'Fairy Queen' and 'Sir Trevor Lawrence', and named after King Edward VII of the United Kingdom. Its 12-15 cm flowers appear in a delicate, pale violet and carry striking red stamens that give the variety its character.
The first flush of flowers opens in June, with a second wave following from July to August. Reaching around 250 cm in height, 'King Edward VII' is well suited to trellises, obelisks and climbing frames, and also thrives in a large container. A position in sun or semi-shade suits it well.
'King Edward VII' is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). For vigorous growth and a generous second flush, cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June. Raised as early as 1902, this variety is considered underrated by Clematis connoisseurs, who believe it deserves far wider use in gardens.
