Clematis 'Mayleen' comes from England and was introduced by the Fisk nursery in 1974; it is regarded as a chance seedling from the Clematis montana var. rubens line. It differs from other cultivars of this line in its especially full, overlapping flowers. The 5–6 cm flowers are clear pink and grow softer from the centre to the margins; they have four broad, wavy-edged sepals and yellow stamens. Add a pronounced vanilla scent and bronze-tinted foliage.
'Mayleen' flowers profusely from May to June, and occasionally a second flush appears in late summer. Reaching up to 500 cm, it is a vigorous climber that scrambles through medium to large trees and conifers and also clothes large structures. It does best in full sun but tolerates semi-shade. Keep the root zone cool and shaded, for example with underplanting or a layer of pebbles.
'Mayleen' is hardy to zone 7 (about -17.7 to -12.3 °C). In very severe winters the flower buds may freeze, so a sheltered position is an advantage. Cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June. Plant it with the crown 5–8 cm deep so that it also shoots again from below ground.

I planted Mayleen in a full-sun spot. Unfortunately it grows only hesitantly and in three years, with one branching shoot, has reached just 2 m. Perhaps it's because of our climate zone 6? Still, the flowers are enchanting and of course so is the fragrance.Automatically translated · Show original
Montana Mayleen has been blooming in my gardens for many years. Its abundance of flowers and its vanilla-like fragrance are overwhelming. It easily reaches a height of 5 m. I've never pruned it, yet I always had a lush display of flowers anyway.Automatically translated · Show original
