Clematis montana 'East Malling' traces back to a collection made around 1884 in central China by the British plant hunter Dr Augustine Henry; Ernest Wilson introduced the form to England in 1901. Its roughly 6 cm flowers open fragrant in a vivid pink – a trait that still defines this selection today.
From April to May, 'East Malling' smothers itself in fragrant, pink flowers and grows vigorously to around 500 cm. This robust mountain clematis is ideal for large trellises and pergolas, where it can fill plenty of space; it thrives in virtually any aspect.
'East Malling' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 7, down to about -17.7 °C). As mountain clematis flower on the previous year's wood and generally need no pruning, simply trim the plant back to about 100 cm for shape after flowering in June – this encourages vigorous new growth and abundant flowering the following year.
