Clematis texensis 'Ladybird Johnson' was raised in 1984 by English breeder Barry Fretwell from a cross of 'Bees' Jubilee' with Clematis texensis. It commemorates Lady Bird Johnson, the former First Lady of the USA, who campaigned for conservation in Texas. The red, tulip-shaped flowers measure 6–7 cm; their four recurved, textured tepals carry a crimson central bar and enclose cream to pale yellow anthers.
'Ladybird Johnson' flowers from July to October, adding colour when many other clematis have finished. At around 400 cm tall it suits trellises, fences and pergolas, and it thrives in sunny to partly shaded positions.
'Ladybird Johnson' is hardy in zone 7 (-17.7 to -12.3 °C). As a pruning group 3 variety it flowers on new wood: cut the plant back to about 25 cm every March to encourage vigorous growth and abundant flowers. It can be prone to mildew, so give it an airy position.
