Clematis 'Pink Surprise' was introduced in 2021 by Polish breeder Szczepan Marczyński and belongs to his popular 'Surprise' colour series of alpine clematis. Its double flowers appear on a white background, speckled and edged in violet, while keeping the typical bell-to-star shape of Clematis macropetala — an appealing combination of form and colour contrast.
At 250 to 300 cm, 'Pink Surprise' is excellent for tall trellises, pergolas and other supports. The main flush appears in May, followed after a short pause by scattered repeat flowers into autumn, and then decorative silvery seed heads.
'Pink Surprise' is very winter-hardy (zone 4, down to about -34 °C) and needs only light pruning: cut the shoots back to about 100 cm in June to keep the plant compact and free-flowering.
