Clematis alpina 'Violet Purple' was raised in 1980 by the Swedish breeder Magnus Johnson from a seedling of Clematis alpina and introduced in 1986. The nodding, bell-shaped flowers are violet, measure 6-7 cm across and show four narrow, tapering sepals around a ring of white staminodes.
'Violet Purple' flowers from April to May and reaches a height of around 250 cm. This makes it well suited to trellises, fences, obelisks and larger containers, and it thrives in any aspect, in sun or partial shade.
'Violet Purple' is very hardy (zone 5, -28.8 to -23.4 °C). Cut your Clematis Violet Purple back to about 100 cm in June to keep growth compact and promote flowering the following year. Once established, it is, like most alpina cultivars, easy to care for.
