Clematis 'Blue Surprise' is a new cultivar from Polish breeder Szczepan Marczyński, in trade since 2021. Its 7–9 cm, broadly bell-shaped flowers open semi-double in violet with a white base; the four narrowly lance-shaped tepals surround numerous staminodes with greenish-cream filaments and cream-coloured anthers.
'Blue Surprise' flowers especially abundantly in May and June, with occasional blooms into July. At around 300 cm tall, the cultivar suits fences, trellises and obelisks as well as shrubs it can climb into, or as ground cover; it thrives in sunny to semi-shaded spots.
'Blue Surprise' is very hardy (zone 4, -34.4 to -28.9 °C) and grows without fuss. Cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June, and it will reliably show its full flowering abundance through the season.
