Clematis 'Advent Bells' was raised in 2009 by English breeder Roy Nunn from a cross between Clematis napaulensis and Clematis cirrhosa var. purpurascens 'Freckles'. It owes its name to the first flower, which appeared on one of the seedlings during the days of Advent in 2006. The small, nodding, bell-shaped flowers are yellow and appear abundantly on the trailing stems.
At 300 to 500 cm in height, 'Advent Bells' suits trellises and climbing frames on sheltered walls as well as container growing. Its flowering period runs from November to January – midwinter, when most other climbers are dormant. A sheltered, mild-wintered position suits it well.
'Advent Bells' is hardy to zone 9 (-6.6 to -1.2 °C). Cut the plant back to about 200 cm in March. As an evergreen winter bloomer, it rewards a sheltered spot with abundant flowers during the cold season.
