Clematis 'Mississippi River' (trade code 'Zomisri') was raised in 2004 in the Netherlands at J. van Zoest and named and introduced in 2010; in the same year it won a Bronze Medal at Plantarium in Boskoop. Its parentage has not been published. The flowers are star-shaped and dark violet, measuring 6 to 8 cm across. They usually carry six tepals and nod slightly, with yellow anthers on violet filaments.
From June to September 'Mississippi River' keeps opening new flowers. At around 150 cm tall it suits herbaceous borders, where it grows among other perennials, or shrubs and roses, through which you can loosely tie in the stems. As a herbaceous clematis it does not cling by itself, so a support or a neighbouring plant to tie to is helpful. It does best in a sunny position.
'Mississippi River' is hardy in zone 5 (about -28.8 to -23.4 °C). Cut the plant back to about 10 cm in March; it then shoots strongly again and flowers on the new growth. We supply it in a 2-litre pot with strong shoots.
