Clematis montana 'Veitch' traces back to wild-collected seed from China, raised by the English Veitch nursery; the form was only officially registered as the distinct cultivar 'Veitch' by John Howells in 2005. Its fragrant, deep pink flowers reach 4 to 5 cm across, are four- to five-parted, and show yellow anthers on white filaments.
'Veitch' flowers from May to June and stays pleasantly compact at around 50 cm — well suited to containers, smaller trellises or obelisks on patios and balconies.
'Veitch' is reliably hardy (zone 7, -17.7 to -12.3 °C). For vigorous growth and abundant flowering, cut the plant back to about 100 cm after flowering in June.
