Clematis 'Will Goodwin' was raised by English breeder Walter Pennell and introduced around 1960 – named after an employee at his Pennell & Sons nursery. Its 14–16 cm flowers appear in rich purple-violet, with slightly overlapping petals bearing finely crisped, frilled edges that fade to a lighter blue as they age; golden-yellow stamens add a warm contrast. This early Patens hybrid was honoured with the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit.
'Will Goodwin' flowers from June to July and reaches around 300 cm in height – enough to reliably cover large obelisks, trellises or arches, and it also combines well with other climbers. The variety thrives in full sun as well as partial shade, making it suitable for almost any spot in the garden.
'Will Goodwin' is hardy to zone 6 (-23.3 to -17.8 °C) and copes easily with colder locations. Cut the plant back to about 100 cm in June, after the first flowering, to encourage vigorous, bushy growth. As with most clematis hybrids, a little patience pays off: full flowering power shows only after one to two years of establishment.

Will Godwin is a very beautiful, robust, particularly hardy clematis. The petal edges are nicely wavy and the flower is huge: up to 20 cm in diameter.
It flowered for me
