The clematis 'Princess Kate' comes from the Dutch nursery J. van Zoest BV, which introduced the variety under the cultivar name 'Zoprika' in 2011; the following year it was awarded a gold medal at the Plantarium in Boskoop. The 4–6 cm tulip-shaped flowers open urn-shaped at first and become more bell-shaped over time: outside they glow in rich pink-purple to red, while the tips, margins and inside stay pure white. The narrow, lance-shaped, fleshy tepals are slightly recurved, and the stamens carry dark red anthers on cream-coloured filaments.
From June to September, 'Princess Kate' produces its contrasting flowers abundantly and reliably, and is considered robust and rarely affected by wilt. Reaching up to 400 cm, this vigorous Texensis hybrid is ideally suited to trellises, fences, trellage or pergolas. A support is essential, and a sunny to semi-shaded position with a cool, moist root zone encourages flowering.
'Princess Kate' is reliably hardy (zone 7, down to about -17.7 °C) and belongs to pruning group 3: in March it is cut back hard to about 25 cm, after which it shoots vigorously from the lower buds. After pruning, the plant benefits from a dose of fertiliser, and like other Texensis hybrids it rewards a shaded root zone with a more abundant flowering throughout the season.
