'Isabella' was bred by Dutch clematis breeder Wim Snoeijer for the J. van Zoest nursery and introduced to the market in 2017 under the plant breeders' rights code 'Zo12220'. The large, star-shaped flowers reach 8 to 12 cm across and display various shades of pink with a mottled effect on the tepals, complemented by striking, darkly coloured stamens.
'Isabella' flowers first from May to June, followed by a second flush in July and August. Growing to around 200 cm, it is perfectly suited to containers, trellises and obelisks, bringing generous flowering even to smaller spaces and patios.
The variety is reliably hardy (zone 6, down to about -23.3 to -17.8 °C) and pleasantly easy to care for: after the main flush, a light prune in June to about 75 cm is all it needs, after which 'Isabella' proves largely tolerant of its growing conditions.
