Clematis 'Elsa Späth' was raised in 1891 at Ludwig Späth's nursery in Berlin and remains one of the best-known large-flowered clematis. Its 10–15 cm flowers are violet and rounded, opening with broad, overlapping sepals; deep red anthers sit at the centre. Some flowers are semi-double.
It flowers from May to August, with the early flush the largest. At around 250 cm, 'Elsa Späth' stays manageable and suits trellises, obelisks and climbing frames as well as containers. Plant it in full sun to partial shade and keep the root zone cool and shaded.
'Elsa Späth' is reliably winter-hardy (zone 6, down to about -23 °C). For vigorous growth and a rich flowering, cut the plant back to about 50 cm in March.
