Clematis 'Guernsey Cream' was raised in 1989 by Raymond Evison on the island of Guernsey and introduced by his Guernsey Clematis Nursery – the name neatly announces both the place of origin and the flower colour. The cultivar is believed to descend from a Japanese strain of Clematis patens, the only species known to carry a natural tendency towards pale yellow colouring. The large flowers open in a soft creamy yellow, often accented by a delicate green central bar – particularly noticeable after cool weather – and gradually fade to pure creamy white as they mature. The eight overlapping tepals give the flower its characteristic rounded, symmetrical shape; yellow stamens add a bright finishing touch.
'Guernsey Cream' is very free-flowering, blooming abundantly from May to June on the previous year's wood and producing a welcome second flush in August; deadheading immediately after the first bloom actively encourages this repeat performance. Reaching up to 300 cm, it suits trellises, obelisks and garden fences, yet also grows well in containers on a balcony or terrace thanks to its manageable habit. It is particularly striking on north-, east- and west-facing aspects: in partial shade its delicate colour holds much longer, and against a dark background – such as an old stone wall – the creamy white stands out beautifully.
The cultivar is hardy to zone 6 (−23.3 to −17.8 °C), making it well suited to most of central Europe. As a pruning group 2 clematis, only light tidying is needed in spring; the key maintenance step is cutting back to around 100 cm in June, shortly after the first flush. This keeps the plant compact, encourages fresh growth and sets it up for the August blooms. In its first year, 'Guernsey Cream' appreciates consistent moisture; once established, it grows reliably and flowers freely.

This one is incredible! By far the most vigorous of all my clematis, it produced a wall of beautiful flowers in its very first year. The young, slightly reddish foliage is especially pretty too. Like fujimusume, it came through all the spring frosts well and had already set about 20 buds by April.Automatically translated · Show original
